Chapter 13

Jane and Elizabeth spent the next hour dancing various dances with several eligible gentlemen. Wickham also engaged in polite conversation with Elizabeth under the watchful eye of Darcy. A group of giggling young ladies nearby also expressed an interest in Wickham’s smart appearance.

Elizabeth was deliriously happy as he escorted her onto the dance floor. She felt the belle of the ball as they danced together. He was an excellent dancer and was very attentive to her. After so much dancing, Wickham expressed his wish for some fresh air with his gentleman friends. He politely excused himself and left the room. The dancing had made Elizabeth hungry. She joined Jane and her mother for some light refreshments.

“Lizzy, you looked so happy with Mr. Wickham,” Jane enthused.

“Do we make a suitable couple?” Elizabeth arched her eyebrow as she picked up her cordial drink.

“Indeed.” Mrs. Bennet crunched a tart in her mouth. “You should have seen Mr. Darcy’s face.” She announced in a loud voice. “When you danced with Mr. Wickham.”

Darcy looked over at Mrs. Bennet in disgust. “Mama, lower your voice,” Jane whispered. “He can hear you.”

“I don’t care if he does.” She took another loud crunch of the tart. “I was watching him..” Crumbs shot out of her mouth. “He had a right scowl on his face.”

Darcy looked visibly embarrassed as her voice rang around the room. Although Elizabeth was amused by her mother’s observation, she turned her attentions elsewhere. “Mama, look at Lydia and Kitty.” She directed her gaze towards a pair of gentlemen. They were enchanted by the girls’ wit and beauty. “They all seem very pleased with themselves.”

“They must be enjoying the Christmas spirit.” Mrs. Bennet looked over with a cautious eye. “Not too much punch, I hope.”

Elizabeth glanced over at Jane, who seemed to be in a despondent mood. “Jane?” She leaned closer to her sister. “I noticed you danced with many admirers.”

“Yes,” she replied in a meek voice. “I enjoyed dancing with them.”

“But you did not engage with them beyond the dance,” Elizabeth remarked. “With your usual charm and conversation.”

“I’m a little out of sorts.” They became distracted by Lydia’s laughter. “This is their night. At least they're enjoying themselves.”

An eligible gentleman came over to claim a dance with Jane, but she politely turned him down.”

“Jane, why did you do that?” Mrs. Bennet was put out by her rejection. “He seemed very keen on you.”

“I’m sure he’ll find another engaging lady.”

Mrs. Bennet turned back to Mrs. Phillips. “Oh sister, what will become of the girl?” They shook their heads. “It’s obvious she still cares for Mr. Bingley.” She looked back at Jane’s glum face. “But it was not reciprocated.”

“You should turn your attention to Mr. Wickham?” Mrs. Phillips asked. “Elizabeth and Mr. Wickham made a fine couple on the dance floor before.”

“Indeed, they do,” Mrs. Bennet replied with a smug expression.

“Where is Mr. Wickham now?”

Mrs. Bennet looked about the room. “Lizzy,” she nudged her arm. “Where is Mr. Wickham?”

“He’s gone to play cards with some friends,” she assured her.
